February—the month of love. We’re not talking about loving your significant other or that special someone. Instead, we’re focusing on the most important Valentine of all— yourself.
Pregnancy is a beautiful process; it’s something that pushes your body beyond its boundaries to new limits it has never experienced. Feeling a loss of control over your changing body is totally normal and something that every woman goes through. We get it—your jeans are snug, your bra is hanging on by the last hook (literally), and you’re facing new emotions and uncertainties. We’ve been there. You are not alone.
Remaining positive is the most important step toward dealing with these changes. Understand what your body is doing for you and your baby. Your body is creating a new little person, so maintaining a healthy pregnancy weight is important to support this process—even when that means gaining weight to do so.
As you look in the mirror, don’t put yourself down. Instead, recognize each individual change as a positive. Your round belly is a loving and supportive home for your developing baby, your growing breasts are creating the purest nutrition for your baby, and any weight gain is your body preparing itself to support the growth of your baby.
You may be reading this and thinking, “Um, hello? Easier said than done.” We thought you might say that. In times of frustration over these changes to your body, find ways to focus on the things about pregnancy that you DO love. Make a list of things that you love about pregnancy. Have fun shopping for new bras and cute maternity clothes. Put together healthy meal plans that give you and your baby all the nourishment you need. Find ways to keep physically active during your pregnancy—go on walks with your spouse or take a yoga class with a friend. Set time aside to pamper yourself to celebrate your body and this incredible journey you’ve begun.
Lastly, talk about how you’re feeling. Talk about your fears. This may seem like a small step, but it can be the most critical. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help or guidance when you’re feeling insecure or upset. Surround yourself with those who love and support you, and enjoy this time of being pregnant.
